Amazon Web Services (AWS) bundles various online services from Amazon. The online retailer Amazon launched AWS back in 2006 and relies on decentralized, globally distributed data centers with huge storage capacity and computing power that Amazon itself needs to run its e-commerce platform. What was once meant to better utilize its own infrastructure has now proven to be highly profitable for Amazon, although all Amazon AWS services are billed based on usage.

Cloud Computing / Virtual Servers

With EC2 (Elastic Cloud Computing) Amazon offers freely configurable, scalable virtual servers. The stacks for example can be pulled up by JSON Script within a few minutes. Since billing is usage-based, AWS EC2 is ideal for high-expansion businesses and business models that require tremendous computing power at specific points. Required resources such as RAM or CPUs can be flexibly adapted or auto scaled. Elastic Load Balancing automatically distributes incoming application traffic across multiple EC2 instances.

With Amazon EC2 you can also use standardized software such as the most popular content management systems (CMS) WordPress, Drupal, Joomla or Typo3 and from the beginning rely on a scaling infrastructure.

Whether it's a company website, your own online application or a mobile app, Amazon Web Services lets you build just about any business idea online, cost-effective, scalable, and future-proof.

Data: storage & distribution

Simple Storage Service (S3) is a filehosting service provided by AWS. Basically, any amount of data can be stored with S3. AWS Simple Storage Service is billed based on usage. With CloudFront, Amazon is also offering a decentralized Content Delivery Network (CDN) that can deliver content worldwide across distributed networks with high-speed and low-latency (and no minimum-use).

Databases and data evaluation

With RDS (Relational Database Service) Amazon provides a databank that provides a set of virtual databases based on MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL or Oracle.

With Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR) companies, researchers, data analysts and developers have a hosted Hadoop framework running on EC2 & S3. With EMR huge amounts of data can easily be processed and analyzed cost-effectively.

Other services provided by AWS

Amazon has developed numerous services and web services in recent years, which are relevant for companies with IT processes on a certain scale. Amazon Web Services also includes development environments such as SDKs for various platforms such as Java, Ruby, PHP, node.js or .NET

With AWS Identity and Access Management, Amazon provides a directory service for managing users and resources in an organization, similar to Active Directory from Microsoft Windows Server.

Fallbeispiele: Kunden von Amazon Web Services (AWS)

A whole range of successful companies rely on cloud solutions from Amazon Web Services (AWS). Some success stories would simply be unimaginable for growing and expanding businesses without the simple and high scalability and the low monthly costs

Companies like DropBox, DubSmash, Yelp, Foursquare, Expedia or SoundCloud rely on solutions from Amazon Web Services. Among the best-known users of the Amazon Web Services are Airbnb, Netflix, and Pinterest.

Airbnb

Just one year after Airbnb's founding in 2008, the Californian company, which offers a platform for renting private residences, vacation homes, etc. worldwide, has moved almost all its cloud computing to AWS. Problems with the previous service provider and the simple administration and adaptability of the Amazon Web Services were decisive here. Airbnb claims to use virtually all AWS services such as EC2, Elastic Load Balancing, MapReduce and Simple Storage Service (S3). Especially during the important phase of rapid growth, it was an advantage to expand flexibly by simply putting virtual servers into the AWS Cloud and to keep costs calculable.

Netflix

Netflix has also been represented in Germany since the end of 2014. In addition to video-on-demand, Netflix also offers in-house productions such as “House of Cards” or “Orange is the New Black” as an HD streaming service. With Amazon Web Services, Netflix was able to pull up thousands of servers and several terabytes of data storage within a short time.

Pinterest

Social Network Pinterest uses AWS to operate its website and develop new features, as well as upload and store content. Pinterest has over 100 million users worldwide.
